Crashing Waves

This painting of crashing waves will be the lesson for next weeks class at Riverside Arts Center.  It is from the EmptyEasel.com web site - from a tutorial on painting moving water.

This painting is 5 inches by 9 inches and is a mixed media piece which also incorporated white crayon in watercolor crayon resist.  It is painted on 140 lb. Canson cold-pressed watercolor paper.

Nice Barb, really lovely swirls and crests and the colors are beautiful...I am interested in how you used the crayon....

Thanks, Susan. I colored the waves and crests with white crayon - quite heavily in the parts I wanted to stay white and more lightly where I wanted to go in with blue paint and gradually change from white to blue. I had to scrub some of the color over the crayon to make the color stay, but it is relatively easy to control. Actually a more advanced version of the watercolor-crayon resist I taught in the classroom for many years. I have also used white candles to form the waves in a painting coming into the shoreline.
