Watercolor Study in Shapes

In  our Chris Leeper workshop last week, he taught us to paint positive and negative shapes directly on the paper - one at a time - eventually pulling the painting together.  I selected a photo I had taken some time ago because it has strong darks and lights.  It did come together and at one place in the process, I questioned that it would.  This was an excellent exercise and I plan to do this often.  This painting is done on 1/8 of a sheet of Fabriano Artistico 140 lb. cold-pressed watercolor paper.

You brought so much away from that workshop, Barb!! This is lovely - the shapes in the foreground almost look like leaves so they fit perfectly with the apples :)

Rhonda - I have certainly bragged on the instructor, Chris, and rightly so - it was a very wonderful week and I did take a lot away from this workshop. It was well worth the money and time - the best workshop I have ever had...maybe because his work touches a chord inside of me so I am very receptive to his techniques and instructive style.
