Barbados Marketplace

 This painting was created from a photo, and with the permission of Corrie Scott, who lives in Barbados.  The painting is 9" x 12" and is painted on 140 lb. cold-pressed Fabriano Artistico watercolor paper.  It is transparent watercolor.  I was taken with the shapes in the photo and how the darks and lights work together and against each other. 

Rose's Wine With Green Grapes

My good friend, Rose, recently brought me a small photo of grapes with wine which she found in the "life" section of the newspaper.  She, and I both thought it would make a great subject for a painting for my class.  This painting is approximately 9"x 12" and is painted on Fluid 100 140 lb. cold-pressed watercolor paper.  This is basically a limited palette painting in 99% greens  and yellow with a little red added to the green to get the dark green of the leaf and the shadows in the grapes.  I don't know who the photographer is, so I can't give credits.  I made some changes when I drew it and added some things that weren't originally in the photo.

We like to drink wine while we paint in class, so this painting is very appropriate for us!!!

Swallowtail

I recently finished this painting from a beautiful photo from my friend, Deb Holmes.  She is a wonderful photographer and she generously shares her work with me.  I am going to use this painting as a lesson for my adult watercolor class at Riverside Art Center in Wapakoneta, Ohio.  I hope they enjoy painting it as much as I have.

Intermediate Watercolor Painters Paint the Peony!!!

I was very proud of my painters this week when they did their renditions of the peony.  As you can see, I have very talented students (better than the teacher, Eh?), and we worked 2 weeks on this one.  Some, still aren't completed.  I am so happy to be working with these wonderful painters and we are truly a watercolor family.

Rosie's Peony 2

I finished this painting this week as a lesson for my intermediate watercolor painting class at Riverside Art Center in Wapakoneta, Ohio.  

This painting is approximately 9" x 11" and is painted on 140 lb. Fabriano Artistico cold-pressed watercolor paper.  The greens are all mixed from cadmium yellow and pthalo blue watercolors from Blick.  The pinks are mostly mixed from quinacridone rose violet from Holbein.

Tomatoes in Copper Colander

I completed this painting during the weekend - a good activity for cold, snowy weather ...it is a painting for my intermediate watercolor class to paint.  It is 8" x  9" and is painted on 140 lb. cold-pressed watercolor paper.

It is painted from a photo on the Paint My Picture web site and the photographer is Lillian Bell.  I am unhappy that the camera read the colors so strongly- especially the reds in the tomatoes.  They are not that intense in the painting.

The most difficult thing to paint in this painting was the background, and then the tomatoes.  I could not get them to look like tomatoes and finally gave up.

The Abanconed Rainbow Truck

I recently finished this old vintage truck painting - this is one in which I pushed the limit in using color.  I was happy the way it turned out.

The painting is 11" x 11" and is painted on Cansons 140 lb. cold-pressed watercolor paper.  It is entirely transparent watercolor. The blues are Antwerp Blue and Ultramarine Blue and the reds are Dragon's Blood and Cadmium Red Light.  The oranges are all mixed from Cadmium yellow and the reds already mentioned and the greens from lemon yellow and Antwerp.

Peggy's Cove

I finished this painting for my class yesterday...It is approximately 12" x  7" and is painted on Canson 140 lb. cold-pressed watercolor paper from all transparent watercolors.

We will probably start painting this on Monday evening during our intermediate watercolor painting class.  I like the way it turned out - especially the colors.  I hope they enjoy it!

Ozee's Old Truck

This vintage truck painting is due to the kindness of "Ozee" who has allowed me to use his wonderful photograph.

This painting is 9" x 12" and is painted on 140 lb. Canson cold-pressed watercolor paper.  I used Indian Red as the primary color in the truck and I dulled down the greens by using sap green  and cerulean blue.  I introduced a lot of muted colors into the house - Payne's grey, cerulean blue, Indian red, and a little cobalt blue.

My class knows that I always have to throw in a vintage truck every now and then - so this will be a lesson for my class.

Pears and Lace

This is the painting that I have prepared to teach this Monday evening at Riverside Art Center. 

 It is a transparent watercolor which is painted on 140 lb. hot-pressed Canson's watercolor paper.  I made a mistake and used the hot-pressed side instead of the cold-pressed side and lived to regret it.  This was so hard to paint on hot-pressed paper.  I must be sure that my students use the cold.  

The crocheted doily was difficult to paint because it didn't all come together until after it was almost all painted and I added the details and the dark bottom.  This is a challenge, but I know my students will handle it well.

30 Paintings in 30 Days: Day 18: Decorative Indian Corn

I prepared the lesson for Monday night this afternoon while visiting and painting with our Thursday group, The Muses! It was a great afternoon. 

This painting comes from a tutorial I found on The Frugal Crafter's blog.  She has the most wonderful ideas and I thought this would be perfect for a lesson.

30 Paintings in 30 Days: Day 14: Trees at Abandoned House

Today I am painting, but will not finish a painting.  I am working on this painting which I started last week with the contour drawing I posted.  It requires a lot of effort and detail and will not be completed in one day.  I assure you, I will continue to be painting most of the day!

Monochromatic Watercolor: Jean

This is my painting for day 6 for the Challenge, 30 Paintings in 30 Days from the Slices of Life website of Leslie Saeta.

This painting is 12" x 9" and is painted on 140 lb. cold-pressed Canson watercolor paper.  The linear portion of this painting was painted wet into wet using a skewer dipped in Payne's Grey watercolor on wet paper and then the shadows were painted on   with a brush.  This is completely monochromatic - Payne's Grey on white paper.  The photo appears to have a rose tint - this is not in the original

The Cook's Spot in Wapakoneta; A Watercolor Painting

This is my painting for day 4 in the 30 Paintings in 30 Days Challenge on the website "Slices of Life" ...  it is a commission piece that I finished yesterday.  The "Spot" is in Sidney, Ohio and is a fixture on the courthouse square and has been since 1941.  This art deco building  is the current building, the original Spot restaurant dates back many more years.  When you walk into the restaurant, you feel like you have walked into a 1940's diner.  George W. Bush ate there when he was campaigning for president in 2004.  It's true claim to fame, though, is the delicious food!

Elegant Elephants

This is my latest painting and also my first painting in the 30 Paintings in 30 Days Challenge on Leslie Saeta's web site.

It was also the subject of our lesson tonight at the Intermediate Watercolor Class at Riverside Arts Center in  Wapakoneta, Ohio.  This is the second painting of the same subject since I always do one ahead of time and then one with the class.

Make Lemonade!

This still life is the new lesson for my students at Riverside Art Center in Wapakoneta, Ohio.  I finished it over the weekend. It is from a source photo by Ellen in Ont which I found in the reference image file in Wet Canvas.

The painting is painted on 140 lb. cold-pressed Arches watercolor paper with mostly Holbein watercolors.

This painting tested my patience - I did not enjoy painting the lemons - and the slice of lemon in the front with the back-lighting was difficult for me. 

The background was also challenging since it was a patchwork of different textures and colors.

I am still not happy with the lemons and I know that my students will do much better on them than I!!!

Some Liquid Refreshment

This will be the lesson for our Intermediate Watercolor Class at Riverside Art Center in Wapakoneta this Monday evening.  I created this painting from a photograph taken by my friend Deb Holmes who generously allows me to paint from her photos.  The original photo was horizontal format, so I used my 'artistic license' to change it to vertical so that the reflection of the tree in the birdbath water made more sense in the painting.  

The painting is 12" x 9" and is painted on Canson cold-pressed 140 lb. watercolor paper with mostly the new QoR Watercolors from Golden Paints.  Their turquoise is awesome.

Antique Glass and Pears

I finished this painting recently - the inspiration was a photograph from the Wet Canvas web site reference library.  I think that this has a sort of old master/renaissance feel - maybe because of the colors.

Courtney's Beautiful Bloom

This painting will be our lesson for Monday night's watercolor class.  This   flower painting is taken from a beautiful photo taken by our neighbor, Courtney Kay Gasson.  She recently won honors for the

photo at the Shelby County Fair in Ohio, and graciously allowed me to use it as the source photo for my painting.

The painting is 9" x 12" and is painted on 140 lb. cold-pressed Canson watercolor paper with mostly Holbein watercolors.  I know my watercolor family will enjoy painting this one.

At Rest On Wrestle Creek

My friend and art student, Bridget Weller, knows that I love to paint old trucks, so she brought me this picture of an old International Dump Truck, which is "resting" on her farm on Wrestle Creek Road.  I also plan to use this painting as a lesson in the watercolor class so she will also paint her truck.  Thanks, Bridget!
